How to Ace the Audition and start hearing,"yasss" more often!

Hello Artists and Leaders,

As a young actress, I remember how it felt standing alone in a crowded room, not sure what to say or do. After hearing more “no's” than “yes's”. I decided I would dedicate every minute of my spare time to learn the ins and outs of the auditioning process. Through many years of training and working behind the scenes at over 730 open calls, I've put together a list of the TOP 5 things casting directors look for in an audition.

# 1: Your Smile

At many open call auditions, you are being evaluated from the moment you walk in the building. During most open calls the directors would look out into the waiting room and whisper to me "that person has such a beautiful smile, I want to see them first". So even if you're nervous, smile. You never whose watching.

#2: Be Yourself!

Directors want to see someone whose authentic. Although it’s great to be in character, 99% of the time in open call auditions talent were called back because of their unique personality.

#3 Define the WHY!

Casting directors don't wasn’t to hear that it’s your dream to be an actor or actress, they want to know, why you do what you do. Those 90 seconds to answer the question "tell me about yourself", is when a director decides whether they want to see more of you or not. Think about when you were a child, did you love playing make believe? You can start off by saying “ever since I was a child I.....

#4 Dress to Impress (Hair, Clothes & Makeup)

This is a big one! You always want to read each casting thoroughly to know what dress code requirements are. When no requirements are posted, you can’t go wrong with following these tips:

TOPS/BOTTOMS MEN & WOMEN: Solid neutral colored top in shades such as (navy, white, white, green, black, brown). No patterns, logos or graphic tees. Collared Shirts, Crew Necks and V-Necks look just fine. Form fitting dress pants or dark washed jeans.

SHOES: Women always wear a pair of heels. Men can wear clean comfy shoe or dress shoes. Absolutely no sneakers!

CHILDREN: Put them in something cute, bright and solid! No graphics or logos. You will be talked about and you want to make sure you're remembered for your ACTING not your crazy outfit.

#5 Be Positive

You're going to get nervous and that's okay. Just remember every day you are one step closer to your dream! So, think positively. It will show in everything you do. From the way you talk, interact, stand and smile! Others will pick up on this positive energy and the directors will take notice.

I hope you all enjoyed these tips. If you liked this article make sure to give me a big thumb up, share with your friends and let me know in the comments what are some ways you prepare for a big audition? Stay inspired,

Jazmyn Edmonds.
